Kate Kyung Sun Lee is a 19 year-old girl who grew up
in Seoul, South Korea before she left with her family to California when she
was in 3rd grade. She flourished and enjoyed her life there for around
10 years. She would define herself as a shy and quiet girl at first sight but
who, once you break the shell, is extremely friendly and talkative.
Kate
was really muddled about her future, first when she had to choose which college
she wanted to go to: staying in California or moving to the east Coast but also
about the career she wanted to pursue. She finally decided to go to Parsons:
the New School for Design mainly because of the major that was offered to
her: Communication Design but now she might want to change because of her
difficulties in using technological tools (Photoshop and illustrator) for a
major that allows her to draw and paint.
Kate’s
experience in New York is quite not what she expected. Of course the environment
is much different than in California where as she said is “much more peaceful,
hot, having your time ” but the main part is that in this metropolis she is
alone, all by herself. Her parents are the most influential persons in her life
since they are the ones who tell her advices and help her all the time, she literally
doesn’t see her life without them. As soon as she will graduate she hope she
will go back to Korea with her family where she could “feel the warmth” and
find a work in the design area probably owning a clothing brand. Kate would
actually compare herself to a puppy because “they get loved from people”.
As a
design student she found her inspiration mostly thanks to the Internet through
websites like YouTube and other online artistic work exhibition. She’s actually really into Keith Haring
because she “likes how he uses simple shapes to form a character with colorful
design”. Once again is family is extremely involved in her life as she started
to like his work because or thanks to his brother who bought a case by Keith
Haring when she was younger.
For the time being, Kate is developing her artistic skills in New York far from her family, but she hopes to see them soon.
