How to give and receive criticism ?

How to give and receive criticism? This is a question that has been treated by Scott Berkun in one of his essay. His main point is that to good feedbacks can be hard to give and to receive, but it is a huge part of designers' work.

First of all, he claims that to critique a work you have to respect the work of the designer and understand it but you also have to talk as much about what's good and what's not by using the PNP sandwich method (Positive negative Positive).

Moreover, according to him when you offer criticism you cannot be mean, sarcastic, arrogant, dismissive.. You have to communicate with the designer in order to help him and give then important advices.

This is what you can't do !

Receiving criticism isn't easy too, it's even worst! You have to listen carefully to what people can say about your work because it can always be better but you also have to ask questions and start conversations with people about your work for improvement.

According to me, it's more challenging than give criticism than to receive as I am not that confident about my work I'm always looking for someone's point of view. Actually if you want to give a good criticism to a designer about his work you have to be really careful about the words you're using and to really understand his work otherwise you can turn out to be really mean and disrespectful and that's why I believe it's harder to give a good criticism!
